I was recently chatting with a friend of mine about something we had both read, about Japanese sex dolls. At first, I couldn’t believe such a thing existed, but then it occurred to me, why not? After all, there have been a lot of advances in the human-like robot technology lately, so why not? Hearing that they are becoming increasingly popular made my friend and I curiosity even more so.
Upon further research, I learned that these Japanese sex dolls are oddly realistic! They are actually made from some kind of silicone. Some even have an internal heating system that allows them to feel ‘warm and alive.’ They have realistic features such as eyes, noses, lips, and even skin that looks and feels like the real thing. Granted, they are still very far away from being able to replicate the full range of human emotions but they are getting closer all the time and some even can recognize your voice.
Even more astonishing is how many different shapes, sizes, and personalities of the dolls one can now find. Some websites even feature the ‘personalized’ models where you can choose all the specifics of your desired partner, such as their eye colour, hair colour, height, weight, and so on. There are even models with AI systems that can mimic real human behaviour!
When it comes to their purpose, there are various reasons why people get these dolls, including to please themselves sexually. Some say they are too shy or embarrassed to approach potential partners and do not want to break a potential partner’s heart, so they decide to purchase a doll. Others say they are not ready for a long commitment with a person and do not want to enter a serious relationship.
Of course, the main subject of the doll is sex. There are plenty of media articles on this topic. Some of the stories feature people having sex with their dolls in order to become sexually fulfilled, while others are exploring the idea of actually developing a unique relationship with their partner doll. It’s hard for me to comprehend that, as I don’t think I would ever go to that avenue. But I haven’t been in those shoes, so I can’t judge what is best for someone else.
Further, I heard that some products now come with virtual reality options. This means you can have a totally immersive experience with your sex doll. Having virtual sex with a partner doll is just as if you are having sex with a real person along with all the graphic details. What’s more, you can manually control the movements of the doll and customize the individual experiences.
So after learning all this about Japanese sex dolls, I still couldn’t help but ask myself “What is the real purpose of these dolls? Is it just for sexual pleasure or to fill a void in people’s life?”
When it comes to the morality of it, I guess it all depends on the individual’s situation. Some may find comfort and relief in these dolls, some may use them as a vice or something else. It’s really up to the user and how they treat the doll. I think it’s important to note, that just like with alcohol or drugs, sometimes even something as ‘innocent’ as a sex doll has the possibility to become an addiction, and in that case, it is not healthy.
The next subject I wanted to explore was the potential environmental harm that could be caused by these dolls. They can take up to a year to produce, with costs ranging from $5,000 – 10,000. But of course, they are not biodegradable and cannot be recycled. Plus, when all is said and done, the dolls are essentially manufactured plastic and silicone that end up in landfills. The environmental burden for creating and disposing of these dolls is indeed heavy.
Moving on, I wanted to learn more about the dolls from a legal perspective. In some countries, these dolls are looked upon with suspicion, while in others they are accepted as an adult novelty item. In Japan, it’s legal to buy, sell, or possess a sex doll as long as it isn’t used as a toy for minors. The law in some Arab countries on the subject is much stricter, with very severe punishments for those that are caught with a sex doll.
There have been cases of people being jailed or fined for vibrators owning a sex doll, depending on the country and the severity of the offense. In some places, the customs and immigration laws are also being enforced on those that try to bring in sex dolls from other countries. So, it is really important to be mindful of the laws of the land before deciding to purchase a Japanese sex doll.
Having done a lot of research, I think the idea of “Japanese sex dolls” is quite interesting, and I’m curious if and how they will be further developed in the future. And, while I cannot speak on behalf of those that have purchased one, I am of the opinion that it’s all down to personal preference in the end.
