A few weeks ago I caught myself in a movie theater watching Sex Doll. I was intrigued by the synopsis, as it contained elements of drama, coming of age, and tragedy. When I heard there was a movie out about a young “sex doll” and her subsequent journey into adulthood, I couldn’t resist but to check it out.
The film follows a young woman, named Valerie, who is a “sex doll”. It starts off as a dark and awkward film, as all coming of age stories do. It follows Valerie through her struggles of identity and finding acceptance within a world that doesn’t understand her. Throughout the movie, she has to fight against emotions of being judged, and labeled as a sex dolls toy, rather than a person. It’s truly heartbreaking to watch, as you can’t help but root for her.
Throughout the course of the movie, we watch as Valerie develops relationships with three very different people. The first person is her “owner”, whom she initially hates, but ultimately caves to his advances. The second is a creepy customer who is desperate to have one night with her. Lastly, she meets a young man named Jean-Pierre, who she has a spark of chemistry with. She believes he could be the one who finally sees her for who she really is, but sadly that never comes true.
The tragic twist comes when Valerie ultimately discovers the truth about her nature. After a heartbreaking monologue, we learn that Valerie is nothing more than an incredibly life-like robotic sex doll, created to please her “owner”. This heartbreaking reveal derails Valerie and the entire movie.
The movie concludes on a bittersweet note, as Valerie decides to leave and search for a place she can call home. She goes off on her own, stuck in limbo between being an object of someone’s desire and becoming her own person, but at least she knows what she wants. She truly is a powerful heroine, and I can’t help but admire her courage.
Although Sex Doll’s plotline couldn’t possibly be seen as positive in any way, the story still carries a strong message of growth and self-awareness. Valerie grows from an innocent sex doll into a self-aware individual and discovers what she truly needs in life. She develops relationships with people, despite knowing she’s not a “real” person, and ultimately chooses her freedom.
Seeing her struggles made me reflect on the value of life, and made me grateful for the opportunities I have. It definitely made me more aware of the world around me, and gave me a unique insight on how one can grow beyond her means.
Valerie finds friendship with a group of other sex dolls in a brothel, providing her a glimpse of hope and support, and an opportunity to gear up mentally and emotionally for her solo journey. Valerie learns to stand up for herself through their support and guidance and ultimately decides to break the chains of her robotic prison and search for the freedom of making her own decisions.
Valerie learns to understand and accept her identity as a sex doll and use her special circumstances as an opportunity to gain control over her own life. She finds the strength to say no and walk away from the idea of being owned, fighting against the industry and reclaiming her rights. She learns what courage is and how important it is to stand up for yourself and for others who needs help.
What I found most inspiring about the film was Valerie’s willingness to take a stand for what she believes in, even if she didn’t what she was fighting for. Her determination gives me hope that we can rise above the judgements placed upon us and find strength in being ourselves.
Valerie gains a strong support system with her new friends at the brothel, and she learns to be fiercely protective of them as well as herself. She courageously stands up for herself and her newfound friends when she discovers that their lives are in danger.
Valerie discovers her true potential and gathers the courage to take back her life. She puts herself in danger, ultimately discovering the dark side of the sex doll industry, forcing her to make a hard decision to either stay with her newfound family or risk her life to save others.
Valerie’s strength and resilience is a great example of how powerful and strong a person can become when pushed to their limits. Despite her robotic nature, she utilizes her mechanical advantages and finds her inner strength. In the end, she triumphs over all her obstacles and shows the world her true self.
Throughout her struggles, I was moved by the strength of her character and the difficulties she faced. I related to her story of searching for identity and place in the world, as I am sure many viewers can attest to. Valerie’s courage is awe-inspiring, and is a testament to the power of the human soul.
Despite knowing that Sex Doll is a deeply unsettling and undoubtedly sad film, I simply couldn’t help but be moved. It truly made me think about my own life, and how I can better use the opportunities I’ve been given, while recognizing that not all can access the same liberties.
